A Painting Comes Alive

A painting of mine was used as inspiration for a music video created by Mary Deas, commissioned by the band First Nature. The painting is actually a composite. I created several acrylic backgrounds and about 3 dozen line drawings of a female figure with a guitar. I then mixed and matched the backgrounds and foreground drawings. This technique allowed for many variations. Check out the final version chosen by First Nature.

Seeing the painting used in this beautiful stop animation video gives me a “wow factor” feeling. The painting truly comes alive. There’s an official Video Screening Party: Friday, December 2nd at 8:00pm. Gottscheer Hall, 657 Fairview Avenue, Ridgewood, NY.

Peru

A few months back my sister and I went to Peru to volunteer our time. My sister, a physician, provided medical services to Peruvians in the rural areas outside of Cusco. I organized arts & craft stations outside the medical clinics for the children. The kids created extraordinary art while they waited to be seen by the doctors. For next year’s trip, we’ll be hosting some art events for the fundraising of medical and art supplies. Reproductions of the children’s art (like the piece below) will be available for sale. Photos taking with the Hipstamatic for the iphone at the Myrtle Avenue fair, Ridgewood NY. At first I thought this app was… instant art — very cheesy. After shooting the pictures below, I’m thinking there is more to it. 1} With the iphone you can capture the element of surprise. Its genuinely discrete. Similar to if you had a zoom lens and you’re on the outskirts looking in. 2} Even with the “cool” effects, if you don’t understand composition, the shots will be simply mediocre. Final conclusion, I feel the hipstamatic/iphone is a valid camera option for artists.

I signed up for a collage class at the Educational Alliance. If you have interest in affordable art classes, this is the place to go. They have day time bargain specials as well as evening classes. I’ve attended open figure drawing classes at the school before - the facilities are well kept and the people seem friendly.

Recently I worked on digital and print signage for the New York Design Center’s “Connected” table-top installation at the 2010 DINING BY DESIGN event. DIFFA’s DINING BY DESIGN brings together some of the most talented and celebrated individuals in the worlds of fashion, interior design, art, and architecture to create spectacular, over-the-top dining environments. This event is an annual fundraiser for the fight against AIDS. It was a pleasure to take part. Here are some photos of the signage and NYDC presentation along with other fabulous creations.

A series of photos taken of my latest work - in progression (oil on canvas). The final is to come. Its not far off from the last photo. I’m definitely using more subdued colors in this piece and I can’t tell you why, it just happened that way. Maybe I need some new paint! Enjoy!
